Working in small space

placing 2" high sleepers.

placing 2″ high sleepers.

Its tight, but I gotta do it… So how do I cut full sheets of 4′ x 8′ sheets? Here I am setting up to cut white foam board. This is pretty nice stuff, easy to work with, so light that I can handle it by myself. Wish I discover this way back and used more of this instead of plywood…. too late now, in the last stages of this reno.

Alright, step by step. 1st place 2 parallel sleepers along the direction of the cut. Just happen to have 2 unopened packs of 8 1/2′ long aluminium thats just great for this application. I am using a simple dining table that is about 5′ long that is just laying around in the yellow room. Since its shorter than the 8′ length of the sheet and that the sheet is so flexible, the sleepers need to be long enough to hold it flat, and I need the ends to align so that I can clamp it down.

Thats as far I can reach from the starting

Thats as far I can reach from the starting, notice how the plywood keep the cut line straight.

Next, lay up the foam board on the sleepers, mark the cut line. In this case, I am cutting a 2″ strip and I am trying to get the cut line close to the edge of the outside sleeper. I clamped down a 8′ long plywood like it is a ruler, so that I get a straight cut.

Remember to put on the safety gear, the bare minimum at least. The saw is not too loud, but still I like to cut out that sound with my Peltor muffs, and the foam dust is bad for my lungs so I used a cheap standard 3M mask… thats on top of my hat… 🙂 .. hat keeps my hair out of my eyes … 🙂 … its a important that I stay focussed on the cut…Finally, start the cut. Walk around to the other side when the saw is out of reach… its okay to not cut all at once… repeat for more strips where needed.

AND remember to sweep up the white foamy dust everywhere… sigh… takes me about 15 mins to clean up after my cuts…

Viola, thats how this false ceiling is made…
