Breezing thru Fukuoka

On hindsight, I wished we spent a little more time at Fukuoka. But we had to rush away as we were trying to make Osaka/Kobe in good weather window and I had some work commitments that somewhat influenced our movements to weekends if possible.

In Hakata Bay, approaching Fukuoka Odo Yacht Harbor.

0600hrs, Lang called Japan Coast guard to let them know our ETA is 0730hrs. No reply on the VHF channel 16… finally have to call from my SG phone… sigh… that’s just another $10 phone call, all becos they refuse to answer my VHF call in English…

We arrive at Odo Yacht Harbor 0730hrs, wasnt sure if we were at the right place cos there were no clear signs that this was Odo YH and there were no officials waiting for us like when we entered Ishigaki. .. We motored to the other marina and shouted over to a boat with 2 local gentlemen on board to ask where is Odo YH… okay, we motored back to where we were again… 0830hrs arriving at Odo YH for the 2nd time, still no signs of quarantine officials, but Jaap was there on dock waving at us. How fortunate we are, that we have a friend in Fukuoka to show us the ropes. Long time resident of Fukuoka, Jaap has been around and knows how to work the very complicated CIQ system… and has a car to drive us downtown to the government offices! Lucky us! Still there were things that surprised him at the government offices… but he helped us work it all out and it was done by noon.

Hey Birdie, is this the Odo Yacht Harbor?

Then it was time for conveyor belt sushi! Jaap brought us to a good one and Doug has the best raw tuna salad with avocado ever! And I had lots of good hotate and fishy sushi… Yum… Wished I had taken pictures of our meal, but we were too excited to be back in Japan and being at a Sushi place that we forgot all our manners…. 🙂

Our 3 days in Fukuoka passed like a blur. After the rush to complete CIQ into Japan paperwork, it was mostly working on the internet for me… setting up office in the early morning at the un-Air-Conditioned marina office and afternoon at the Air-Conditioned Macdonalds’ thats across the street. .. The days were too hot for us to do anything, 37 deg cels! And nights were not at all cool.

Sometimes we just sit around in the pit, under the bimini and trying to stay cool. There is usually a good, slightly cooling breeze outside the cabin. .. way better to sit outside then inside for sure. And then we wonder, how can these kids be so having a great time sailing their little all exposed dinghies around.

View from the cockpit... its 37 deg cels... Is there anybody else who cares?

Finally, our last evening in Fukuoka, we meet Jaap again and this time with Mairike too. They took us to a great Japanese restaurant and we had great food and great time catching up with cruising news! And even a ride up the mountain for a glimpse of Fukuoka, and a little time to visit with the kitty cats Nori and Wakame. Last we saw them was at Sebana in 2010!  Was good to know that we all are doing well with our cruising and off-cruising lives… 🙂

… hindsight…. we absolutely regret not having a picture of our group at dinner …. sob sob sob…. and the kitty cats… but it was too dark and a thunderstorm was threatening to break loose any moment… life on the move, not much can be planned to perfection.
