5 weeks at Marina Yacht Services

Oh my oh my! We cant wait to be floating again… … yeah.. by the time I get around to blog posting, we are in the water and have gone back to Keppel and I have my trusty internet at home to actually post pictures .. right.

Calliste oil damaged anitfoul being sanded away.

Calliste’s oil damaged antifoul is sanded down to the white primer by the worker at Marina Yacht Services. It only took they 2 days or so..

Patches of antifoul painted on.

I thot it interesting that the sanding workers were still going at it, and the painters came by and saw opportunity to paint patches of grey primer, followed by blue interspeed and even the red antifoul. They painted the patches where they want the cradles to be, where the pads will cover up the area. Its interestingly that you could paint it patches before the job, or move the boat and paint the covered up areas after the job.

Where is everybody...?

I thot this is a really cute picture. Its like we came back to find Calliste all exposed… ;) There were other boats around to hide her “nakedness” earlier, but suddenly they were gone! Now, where is everybody?

Interspeed blue going on.

Ok, so Calliste was only exposed for a while, then she was moved to the “painting booth”. Our antifoul is color coded. Red on blue on grey on white. When blue starts showing, we know its time for new antifoul paint.

The mobile painting station.

The mobile paint station allows the painters to set up next to the target boat. They spray on antifoul around here. Its not usually done this way, but they seem to be done much better here than other yards.

Our painters. The master and the apprentice.

Painters posing for us. The master and his apprentice. Seems like they are happy with the results. Red is looking good on her.

On deck view with Calliste on the hard. Interesting perspective.

Meanwhile, Doug has been working on the mast… and me too!

Gooping carefully around each fixture with some silicon..

Things are looking good. It seems like the antifoul painting and the mast building will complete around the same time. .. Doug work 16hrs days and well into the night, rain or shine, 7 day weeks. It was tough. I provided the food and the beer that kept him going… how about that! .. and the decals…

Oh look! Its done. Mast raising the next day.

We are close to sailing again… with Calliste’s new mast! We are not there yet.. but we are closing in on the target. Lets see.. we still need to replace the rigging wires, halyards, boom gallows… these are small things, a little here and a little there…

Vandalized prop! Hee hee... I did that!!

Its been so long. .. I thot its another never ending project! .. but here we are, 1day away from mast raising.

The final moments at MYS. Mast installed

Ah HA! I had fun vandalizing the prop with squeaky pen.. some say its really effective at underwater growth control… we’ll know in 3 months if it work or not..

Calliste in the slings!

Alright! The MAST is IN! This is a nice crane, kinda overkill for this task, but nice job all the same.

Calliste in the slings again! Ready for launch.

In the soup.

There she goes. I could almost hear her “quack” … like a duck happily getting its bottom wet and its little feets paddling away.

Seems like we be needing to go to Phuket for the wires soon, and maybe Rolly Tasker have a good selection of halyards too. We have the gallows almost ready. ..

Yes yes.. we have more than just these things.. but we need to take a break and celebrate this milestone!

Finishing touches on Calliste mast

Calliste waiting for the lift.

We are so busy these days, working as fast as we can on finishing up Calliste haulout at MYS. Everyday on the hard is costing us money… we have to continue to pay for the phantom slip at Keppel and each day is about S$50 on the hard… ouch! … wait, is it S$70 now.. DOUBLE OUCH!

Calliste in the slings

Here we are, just arrived at MYS waiting area. The lift is launching a big blue hull.

The travelLift is a great piece of machinery. Every boat owner should have one :) … if money and space is no object.

Ah.... the pool

We have fond memories of being here at Raffles Marina in 2005.. and bad memories too, but just try to remember the good ones.

Chubby dog waiting for its people to finish breakfast!

Look, whos ready to go sailing!

Ok ok.. enuf lazing around. Get to work! <whip>

Calliste new mast... before the decals .. see! theres a cute umbrella at the end.

This is Calliste’s new “hard clear” anodized mast being assembled, while her bottom is being sanded and prepped for new anti-foul.

Reflective yellow from 3M.

Her rudder had some old primer blisters… which we suspect is due to the painters neglience 5 years back. We had re-fibreglassed the rudder then, and new primer and anti-foul. Now we find that the primer had adhesion problem with the fibreglass because it was not sanded smooth before painting on the primer. How could the most reputable yard around here not know that this was going to be the problem!!??

New mast with the wiggles and old yellow mast in the back.

We are adding bright yellow reflective decals to the mast! :) Doug wanted a gold anodize mast, but thats gonna cost us S$4000 more! Decals are just S$100 + plus 2 days of our time… and its reflective!

Its all going to turn out well. I’m sure! And I am looking forward to our trip back!

Making faces. …

I cant think of a better name for this post. I am, really, making faces… :) :P

Chinese painted face on a building

Was on my way to the lawyers’ office in Maxwell Road, near Chinatown, and saw this painted face on a building. It certainly was super eye-catching! Just grabbed me. That one did. Then I thought this was a great idea for making decals. … for laptops! Among other things..

Peking opera face

Blue! Chinese painted faces.

Doug thought its material for nightmares… HAH! They do kinda look fierce… but I like the colors. And the colors do have meaning… according to my google research.. Blues and Greens are usually righteous rebellious charactors, Reds are justice and authority, Whites are comedians or lesser roles, Yellow are for Royalty. .. Something like that…

Making faces!

My assembly plant. 1st, cut the different colors and the clear. Then, use a transfer tape to lift the clear off the backing, align carefully onto the face color, ie blue. Then lift off clear with the blue, and align carefully onto the black. Finally, lift off clear with blue and black, align carefully onto the red.

Ta Da! My rebellious Blue face is done!

The more traditional colors... red and blue, chinese opera faces

Ok, repeat the same for Red and Yellow. I make a dozen in an hour… :)

Opps, 1 yellow is misaligned! Can never be to careful about alignment! A little bit off and it really shows!

Peking opera faces

Yellow! Drats! One of them is misaligned!

So! What d’ ya think? Too much work for these ugly looking things? Yeah, they are not pretty, just damn fascinating … me thinks.

.. Now I need to find a laptop to put this on..

Undressing Trio

Trying to get a corner lifted...

Since we moved our weekend home from Malaysia, I had been thinking about selling Trio. I bought her when we really needed car transportation, carrying our stuff between home and Sebana. Now, we still do use her for weekend transportation between home and Keppel, and we still do carry plenty of stuff to sort of feel like we need to keep her around.

Back to the factory state again.

.. but then, not really because the public transport between home and Keppel is really not difficult. Sure we couldnt carry as much as we did before, and on days that we have more stuff to bring, we could get a cab. Its way cheaper than keeping a car around in Singapore that is so rarely used.

A little Trio soveneir and Trio touch up pens. ...

Okay, so the decision is made and Trio is sold. .. for a very good price. It so happen that I bought her when demand for cars was low, and sold her when demand is high… my lucky day. Taking off depreciation, I lose nothing at all. We got such good use out of her. … Hope she finds a new owner that will use her well and treat her nicely… <sob><sob> … I do feel a little attached…

Painted with Trio touch up paint... Looks more like it..

Sigh… removing the flower decals is like undressing Trio. She will no longer be dressed in my family colors.. … This is a little tough on my nails. The vinyl stuck on well for all these years. A little edge at a time, and then got enough to lift. It took an hour for both of us to get it all off, and then to remove remnant adhesive with a little lighter fluid and rag. No worries, the lighter fluid does not hurt the paintwork, unless paintwork is so old that its falling apart anyway.

Ah... the finishing touch! Trio is back!

Else use car wax to do the same, but its harder.

Okay. Now what… back home and painting my little Trio… look, we are moving away from Singapore eventually and we could not bring Trio with us, but little Trio no problem.

What do you do on a day off?

How about making some “boat cards”?

Matt laminated, double sided boat cards.

Boats cards are useful little things… I didnt know about them until I received my 1st one from Doug. … see, I married the guy that gave me my 1st boat card! There must be some magic in that card.

Anyway, I am badly in need of some cards and so thats what I did today. This time, I decided to make them double sided and laminated. I think boat cards should be waterproof… especially if the ink is so soluable and smudges up immediately on contact with any liquid.

For laminating, I use my clear matt vinyl. Then cut them up with the knife edge paper cutter… but somehow its pretty irregular.. shape and size are not all the same… Thats what you get for making your own cards… At a factory, they’ll stamped it and it will all be the right size. But hey, for professionally made laminated cards, it would cost S$0.25 each and you would have to order 200pcs to get that price!

Maybe I will develop a way to cut it better.. next time..

1 design, many applications

Classic design, praying hands

A friend requested that I make some praying hands Iron-ON for her Sunday school bag. I thought that was nice, so I made the design and the decal for her… I will have to ask her to send a picture of her tote bag with the decal later…

praying hands in for different look and feel and applications

I thought the design came up really quite well, so what other ways would I use it? Ah HA! Christmas gifts! This year, all my Christain friends would get either a bookmark or car window decal with praying hands. :)  Or a different design…. Maybe a Christmas tree or something….

Adhered on left and right sides, easy to peel off if you wish to.

The bookmarks, 1 made transparent light grey and 1 made with dark grey on a piece of cream color paper, are laminated on both sides. I think a flat string or something added to it might be practical. .. Have no ribbon with me right now…

The blue praying hands is for car window. This is not cling on, but it is laminated on both sides with a 1/4″ clear sticking surface for the window. See the window decal, … stuck on a really dirty window, is not looking too nice… should have cleaned the window 1st… sigh…

Any comments and ideas..? I am thinking about making my kitty cat decals into these too! :) I think simple designs work best.

Signs!

Cheap Sign making

A quick one…

This is the month of the hungry ghost… on the Chinese calender that is. Around here, much evidence of offerings are everywhere… I am either not Chinese, or just plain ignorant.. dunno which…

This month, you will also find many stage shows around residential areas. The famous skimpy dress singers and dancing. Loud… and actually quite entertaining… for a change. .. And I think “Lets’ Party” !  Am going to put this one outside my cube at the office..  should be quite a talking piece…

And yes, I am going to sell my Drax….  I made the signs in 1hr.. I am afterall, the decal maker! And I stock these plastic corrugated boards for whenever I need them.. :)

Sticky’s new product! Iron On Decal

Just what I wanted! Kitty on my back

I am so excited about this new thing. Its just so great! I can have my own most unique T-shirt! Look! I always wanted a cat on my back.

Decal cut and ready for ironing

I have had some queries from my sticker customers for T-shirt printing.. which I didnt use to do.. and this is still not the same as printing. Its IRON-ON!

Ironing with a translucent paper.

1st, cut the decal on a thermal vinyl decal material. This material is different from the sticker vinyl that I usually use. .. but its really the same in a way. The machine for making these decals is the same.. and they are both vinyl…

Peel off the clear backing sheet, decal is now on the fabric

Place the decal, plastic side up, on the fabric (polyester and cotton blends only). Place a thin sheet of translucent paper (comes with new T-shirts) on the decal, or another thin T-shirt fabric will do just fine.

Decal is now on the T-shirt. Dun worry about the square residue, it washes off.

Iron for 15seconds, highest heat you can get. Let cool for 30 seconds, it okay to peel off the backing clear plastic when still warm.

You may see a slight residue of the sticky residue from the backing plastic on the fabric, but no worries, it washes off. .. so tada! thats it. you got it!

Now you can order your very own personalized custom decal from me! Write to me at sticky.business@yahoo.com and check out my other blog, http://coolvinyldecals.wordpress.com  for more designs.

I am learning .. …

12 sheets pack of A4 sized vinyl for US$9.95

So, I am new to business and I hear that there is plenty to learn. Just last week I paid a very small price to learn about shipping.

See, I listed this pack of 12 sheets of vinyl for US$8.95 + US$1.00 for shipping on Etsy… only to discover that it cost S$10.30 to ship via registered post to the US. Didnt think 12 sheets of A4 size vinyl weights that much…

Well, on the profits and loss calculations, the nett gain of S$3.50 is not enuf to pay for the 12 sheets of vinyl … well, so I learn. .. to factor in weight for shipping now..

delivery by Singapore registered post! S$10.30

There is one other thing that I am learning too, that I am willing to take losses for now as I am trying to establish myself in this business. To remain competitive in pricing, I kept the same price but up the shipping to US$3.00. What this means is that it will be no loss when the next package sells, but it wont be profitable too. Certainly not worth my time and effort to go to the post office, but I do hope to get the positive feedback rating that would help future sales for years to come…

BTW, how do u like the light blue decal on the top left of the envelop..? Those are my personal addition to make a plain envelop look pretty… I thought it was a nice touch.
